Dr.  Bruce D. Perry is the Senior Fellow of The ChildTrauma Academy, a not-for-profit organization based in Houston (www.ChildTrauma.org) and adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. 

Dr. Perry is the author of over 300 journal articles, book chapters and scientific proceedings and is the recipient of numerous professional awards and honors, including the T. Berry Brazelton Infant Mental Health Advocacy Award, the Award for Leadership in Public Child Welfare and the Alberta Centennial Medal. He has presented about child maltreatment, children's mental health, neurodevelopment and youth violence in a variety of venues including policy-making bodies such as the White House Summit on Violence, the California Assembly and U.S. House Committee on Education.

Dr. Perry will be preceded by Karen Logan, Child Welfare Manager from the El Paso County Department of Human Services, who will present information about current child maltreatment issues.

This interactive workshop will integrate information based on current research to enhance our understanding of the brain and how it affects behavior and learning. It will cover the Three Bs – the Brain, BrainWise (Dr. Patricia Gorman-Barry) and Brain Rules (John Medina). We will discuss the anatomy & function of the brain, Wizard and Lizard, epigenetics, how the brain works according to the Brain Rules for Baby, how children learn, the role of early life experiences and emotions in the thinking and learning process, why relationships matter, what the brain needs and how enrichment affects the brain but also debunk some brain myths. The goal is to provide theory and practice with successful tips and techniques to make a difference in the development of children.

Teller Early Childhood Council Meeting

The next meeting of the Teller Early Childhood Council is on May 6, 2011 from 1 to 2:30 P.M. at Gateway Elementary School, 101 N. Baldwin St. , Woodland Park, CO 80863. For information please contact Keith B. Marcantel at kmarcantel@wpsdk12.org or (719) 686-2291.

The Teller Early Childhood Council provides guidance to the administration of the Child Find programs and the Colorado Preschool Program funding for the school districts of Teller County. The Child Find program consists of the screening and evaluation programs in place to identify children from birth through age 5 who have a disability so that they may receive early intervention. The Colorado Preschool Program provides funding for the preschool education of three and four year old children who are "at risk" of having delays in their development. The general public is welcome at the meetings, which occur six times during the school year. Parents of children and professionals who work with children aged 0 to 5 years old are encouraged to attend, as well as representatives from the business community.
